Travel Coaching Resources

As a travel coach, the O.F.S.A. expects you to attend meetings held by the DOC’s,; attend Clinics held by the DOC’s; and to ultimately seek your license. To aid in your successful coaching experience, our DOC’s have listed these following resources that you can download or view:

Additional Coaching Resources

OFSA supports Coaching Education. The following coaching resources have been made available for both the
TRAVEL and RECREATIONAL IN-HOUSE Coach. We encourage all TRAVEL and RECREATIONAL coaches to
continue their coaching education by taking either NSCAA or USSF approved coaching classes.  In support, OFSA will
reimburse coaches for their coaching education classes up to OYSAN/USSF “D” License.

Coaching Education
Running Laps, Standing in Lines, and Listening to Coaches’ Lecture are the Red Flags for a bad day at soccer practice! Kids love to play soccer games, so attending a coaching course is the best remedy for keeping kids (and coaches) happy and learning in soccer. Observations worth Noting

  • 7v7 in half field and 11v11 are totally inappropriate for players under 12 years of age as they encourage Kick and Chase Soccer
  • Kick and Chase games do not develop the building blocks – close control, passing, dribbling and ball possession
  • Cologne Study on Small Sided Games.PDF

Training Methods

The observations below are gleaned from www.finesoccer.com concerning the whole-part-whole training method of teaching as compared to the part-whole training…

“In coaching we often start off with simple warm up activities and then proceed to individual skills training, then small sided groups then full sided groups. This would be an example of part-whole training. We start by working with a small thing (the power step for shooting as an example) then move up to shooting a stationary ball then shooting a moving ball and will slowly progress to shooting in a game situation.

The first whole part of the whole-part-whole coaching concept is different:

1.  Show the whole concept of the skill by giving it a context within a game situation. A skill is useless unless the players are able to give it some purpose.

2.  Tell the players why the skill is being learned, what situations it applies to and why it’s important to know.

3.  Use some type of shadow training to create the situation in a game like situation so the players understand the
     situation.

4.  Next focus on the process. Just the individual skill. Break the skill down to small components and teach in great
detail. Repeat often to establish good habits. It’s better to do it slow and correctly than fast and incorrectly.

5.  Next, build back up to the ‘whole’ situation again. Add into a game situation with an emphasis on the part.

Utilizing the whole-part-whole concept of teaching is another way to make you a better coach and your team better
overall.”
